Henin retires opening up the French Open to a new Champion

altDear Reader,

It is not often in tennis when an announcement is such a surprise and also has such an impact on the sport. This is the first time a World No 1 has retired as a No 1 and also the first time that a player has requested that their name be immediately taken off the computer. These two decisions show the strength of character and individualism that I believe contributed to her great success. Few players have maximised their physical presence and their talents to the extent that Justine was able to do given her height in a sport dominated by taller players. Her incredible work ethic (MCTA coach Antony Hampson experienced on many occasions as her hitting partner) which allowed her to become No 1 in the world I think has contributed to her early retirement because having witnessed her training and through my friendship with Carlos - her coach - I know the sacrifices she endured to reach her goals. This effort has surely taken its toll.

All anyone can say is ‘congratulations’ to a great career, an excellent coaching job and a proud exit.

Henin’s retirement has opened up the women’s draw and many players will be licking their lips in anticipation of a greater chance of lifting the trophy. None more than Sharapova, who is best placed to win given that Ivanovic and Jankovic have yet to win a Grand Slam. I believe if Sharapova does not win it this year – which has become a transition year – then she will not win the French Open since clay is not her best surface. In my opinion the winner will come from one of these three players.

Nadal Nadal Nadal, maybe Djokovic and maybe Federer if Djokovic beats Nadal. There is very little to say about the French Open on the men’s side apart from it is very interesting to see if Djokovic can beat Nadal.

MCTA

Ilija Vucic, who recently won both the singles and doubles in Istres along with Henri Kontinen are playing the Astrid Bowl in preparation for the French Open Juniors whereas Fitzpatrick will be preparing on the grass for Wimbledon.

Recently Henri won the ITF doubles in Santa Croce, Hawkins and Fitzpatricks a doubles Challenger in Mexico and Stefy Boffa made the finals of a Challenger also in Mexico.
