It is not
often that tennis players surprise me
with their actions since I have been in
tennis all my life as a player and a
coach. It is refreshing when a player
does something surprising which embodies
the spirit of sport. What am I talking
about? Roger Federer winning an Olympic
doubles gold medal and the excitement
and desire he showed in the final plus
the joyous celebration after the win was
a sight to behold. I was sure after his
poor singles match he would be anxious
to get to NY and be less motivated for
the doubles. How fantastic that the
ideal of the Olympics was upheld by his
performance in Beijing showing how much
he valued any medal in the games? Rafa
also showed why he is equally humble and
a great Champion and both he and Roger
lead the sport of tennis in a way I've
never known.
The US Open is between 4 guys, Rafa, Fed, Novak and Murray with Blake, Del Potro and Gulbis in there as a spoilers. I think Fed is the man since the Olympic doubles released a lot of pressure and I think he will be truly relaxed for the first time since the end of last year. The womens is wide open and anyone of 10 girls can win it! Williamses will be hard to beat but they get fragile at strange times as do the Serbs and the Russians. There is no leader at the moment so we continue to wait for a clear no1 to emerge. It is a wonderful opportunity for one of the top girls to fill the void left by Henin.
