David Sammel is offering a series of Tennis Mental Tips and Quotes from Wimbledon, where he is at the moment with the players of The Monte Carlo Tennis Academy.

'British players need to open their shoulders and enjoy the Wimbledon experience. It is an opportunity to savour and do yourself justice for all the hard work that got you into the tournament'.

John Lloyd (British Davis Cup Captain and BBC commentator)
'Take in your surroundings when u walk on court then get on with the job'

Sarah Borwell (GB Wimbledon doubles / 2nd round singles 2006)
'Now that I have played Wimbledon, I can honestly say that I enjoyed it a lot because I was able to play the match like it was any tennis court. that way the atmosphere and the crowd are a positive influence and add to the enjoyment rather than something to be feared. 'The day before a match the physical work is all fast and explosive. It is also a very short session. We never do steady state running as it is the fast twitch muscles that need turning on for tennis'. 'Watching the ball well is very important. To improve my ability to watch the ball my coaches will feed me balls from the basket and I will hit the ball and not look up until after the ball has bounced. Although this is exagerated when you play it seems easier to focus on the ball'. My coach measured a court and then a Wimbledon court and they were the same size. He has told me that once the match starts play the court not the surroundings as every court is the same size and Wimbledon is only a label. Appreciate the prestige off the court but remember the game, court and rules are the same no matter the venue. Next week I get the chance to prove I can do this' When I'm nervous I often chant 'ball, ball, ball, watch the ball' which keeps my mind on this simple instruction rather than drifting to unhelpful thoughts'.
